South Africa, France, New Zealand and Australia in the World Cup 2007 semi-finals?
The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. The current model features 20 nations competing over a month in the host nation, France. There are two stages, a group and a knock-out. The winner (first position) and runner-up (second position) of each pool enters the knock-out stage. In Paris on Friday night Tony Spreadbury will set the sixth World Cup in motion, He will get the two captains together, Raphaël Ibañez of France and Agustín Pichot of Argentina. He will not need to introduce them as they will know each other well from playing club rugby in France’s Top 14. But he will want them to spin a coin to decide which way they will play and who will kick off to start the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

The 1995 tournament was hosted by South Africa—the nation that originally tipped the vote that saw the first event take place. The tournament was the first that South Africa would actually play in, following the end of the international sports boycott. The tournament had a fairytale ending, as South Africa were crowned champions over the All Blacks, which concluded with then President Nelson Mandela, wearing a Springbok jersey and matching baseball cap, presenting the trophy to the South Africa’s captain Francois Pienaar. The moment is seen as one of the most emotional in the sport’s history.
